I'd considered it safer to pay when served, as opposed to keeping a running tab. a cover charge that may range from 100-400 pesos (approx $9-$36), often on
weekends and sometimes this cover includes an open national bar. Ask before
paying. And yes I will say that The drinking age in Vallarta and throughout the Republic of Mexico is 18, though a number of establishments in this holiday resort city don't card carefully. The bars, lounges, restaurants and cantinas are permitted to serve alcohol until 2am; night clubs and other special late-night entertainment venues can stay open and serve until 4am-6am or so. The nightlife party scene in the bars and discos generally has a rather late start, coming to life around 10pm-11pm or even later and going into the early morning hours, and as to be expected the weekends are the most popular time to go out and tip a few. It would be difficult to find
a boring nightlife location in Puerto Vallarta, especially during the 'high
season' winter months of November to April which include the most popular
times of year: Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years week, and of course, college
